Craig captures the essence of the cries of the Ukrainian people with this exquisite a cappella composition. The dark pathos radiates from this anthem, along with the bright hope for a new day. Dissonance and consonance weave back and forth, ebbing and flowing with the emotion so charged in every phrase. Haunting, glorious, high, and holy. Alleluia!
Selected for the 2013 Labor Day at the Cathedral (for adult singers), Craig will be conducting five of his own compositions, this being one. As beautiful as this setting is, it is highly exciting to think of the sound of 200 adults singing this 8-part anthem a cappella in the National Cathedral with the composer conducting.
