"When the Saints Go Marching In" is a joyful, Dixieland setting of this classic African-American Spiritual. This anthem can also be used to create an entire “joy of heaven” themed service when paired with the Hymns and Spirituals for Dixieland Band.

Two recent performances of "When The Saints ..." have proved it to be an audience favorite: once at the 2013 Baylor Festival of Youth Choirs and the other several weeks later at the San Diego Choristers Guild Youth Choir Festival. In both cases, we were fortunate enough to include superb Dixieland bands to accompany. Students and audience were very enthusiastic as this special color piece was performed at the end of Festival repertoires.
Rhythms in places are a little tricky and will need some special attention. As is usually the case, the students catch the rhythms faster than we might imagine, so it's wise to be prepared to keep moving them forward.
When time permits, adding a little (but not too much) choreography ... suggest at the beginning of the Dixieland section ... will add interest and fun to the performance.

The Bottom Line
Pros
Lots of enjoyment in this selection
Cons
Careful that the joy in singing it does not undo the choral precision, rhythms crucial
