This hymn is used to open the Service of Lessons and Carols, heard annually in the chapel of Cambridge College each Christmas Eve. That event is what Joel Raney had in mind when he crafted his new setting for SATB and children’s choir. The pairing of the familiar words along with bits of O Little Town of Bethlehem, plus Joel’s original themes, join together for a powerful anthem.

This is an ideal anthem for services dealing with prayer for peace in our world and for the light of Christ to shine: “In a world where hatred seems so strong, may your grace right the wrong. Give your peace.” This choral setting, featuring a powerful text and gorgeous music, is a prayer for that peace. Lovely and meaningful!

This easily-learned Advent anthem has a simple accompaniment provided by six handbells. The exquisite hymn melody is presented in a simple three-stanza form with a minimum of part singing, and the transparent bell accompaniment gives it an effective, chant-like feel.
